Wayne Coates & Chia - A Little History
An Ancient
Crop..
In 1991, while on the faculty of the University of
Arizona, I was evaluating alternative crops for
Northwestern Argentina, looking for ways farmers could
diversify their crop production and increase their
income. One of the seeds planted was chia (Salvia
hispanica L.)
Chia grew well, so we began looking at how it could be
used and how to commercially grow it. Additionally, we
began to research how location, climate, soil type, etc.
affected chia seed quality.Feeding chia to animals
improved the products produced, but we also realized
that consumption would bring about even greater health
benefits. Hence, we began to educate the public on
chia’s health benefits and started to market chia in
2005 using our Arizona Chia website. The main issue
facing chia at that time was it was essentially unknown.
In 2008, we sold our company and I continued to do chia research, work with growers and product developers and worked as a chia consultant. As knowledge of chia continued to increase, and more people were looking to buy quality chia at a resonable price, we formed a new company called AZChia.
This is
what this website is all about and it has three main purposes:
1. Provide the best technical information possible
regarding chia
2. Provide information on how you can consume chia
3. Provide a place you can buy high quality chia at a
very reasonable price.
